Clackamas County, Oregon rents pasture at $65 an acre. Across the county line, Wasco County gets $6.90.

Both rates come from USDA's Cash Rents Survey, which publishes down to the county every year. The measurement of your local lease market exists, and it is public. Few people who sit down to negotiate a pasture lease have seen it. They walk in with a neighbor's price or an old extension sheet, and they sign for the year.

Two leases, two numbers

Leasing out land is a cash rent question: dollars per acre, tracked county by county in 45 states. Grazing your cattle on someone else's ground is a grazing fee question: dollars per animal-unit-month, per pair or per head, tracked in the 17 states with most of the country's rangeland. They are different transactions, and this site never blends them.
